3T MRI Scanning
Published: 19 February 2013

The latest generation of MRI scanners feature 3 Tesla (3T) magnetic field strength, giving a higher image resolution than the older 1.5T scanners still used in many NHS and private facilities.
Why Resolution Matters for Spinal Imaging
For spinal conditions, the difference in image quality between 1.5T and 3T can be clinically significant. With 3T scanning:
- Smaller disc herniations and annular tears are more clearly visualised
- Nerve root compression and inflammation is easier to identify
- Modic changes and end plate pathology are more clearly defined
- Soft tissue structures including ligaments and facet joint capsules are better resolved
This means less ambiguity in the report and more confidence in the diagnosis, which translates directly into more targeted treatment.
Our MRI Referral Partnership
Spine Plus directs patients to Nuada Medical, located on Queen Anne Street in West London near the Harley Street area, for 3T MRI scanning. Our partnership with this facility and its radiologist spans over a decade. We review the images ourselves alongside the written report to ensure nothing clinically relevant is missed.
Private MRI scanning through our referral starts from £350, making it accessible for patients who need a high-quality scan without the wait times or standardised protocol of NHS scanning.
Call us on 020 8506 1000 to discuss an MRI referral.
