What Is Electro Acupuncture?

Electroacupuncture combines conventional acupuncture needle placement with the application of a low-level electrical current through the needles. This enhances the standard acupuncture effect by more powerfully stimulating the neurological pathways involved in pain modulation. It is particularly indicated for chronic and stubborn pain conditions where standard dry needling has provided only partial improvement.

The Treatment Process

Acupuncture needles are placed in the relevant therapeutic points, after which small electrode clips are attached to the needle handles. A low-level electrical current is then applied, producing a gentle rhythmic muscle pulsation. The current level is adjusted to your comfort throughout the session. Each session takes approximately 30 minutes, including setup, with needles in place for around 20 minutes.

Is It Safe?

Electro acupuncture is not suitable for patients with a pacemaker or poorly controlled epilepsy. Outside of these contraindications, it is a safe and well-tolerated treatment when delivered by trained practitioners using single-use sterile needles, as is the case at all Spine Plus clinics.
