Fari T: Two Years of Middle Back Pain Eased with Dry Needling and Medical Massage

Published: 13 December 2019

Fari had been dealing with middle back pain for two years. She'd tried various approaches without finding lasting relief until she came to Spine Plus, where dry needling and medical massage addressed the root cause.

Middle Back Pain

Pain in the thoracic (middle) spine is less common than lower back or neck pain but can be just as disabling. Common causes include:

  • Thoracic facet joint dysfunction
  • Myofascial trigger points in the paraspinal and rhomboid muscles
  • Rib joint restrictions
  • Postural strain from prolonged sitting

Trigger points in the thoracic region often cause deep, aching pain that's aggravated by sustained postures. They can be persistent because the area has limited movement compared to the neck and lower back, making trigger points harder to self-resolve.

Dry Needling and Medical Massage

Dry needling (medical acupuncture) is particularly effective for thoracic trigger points because the needle can access deep paraspinal muscles that massage alone cannot adequately reach. The needle elicits a twitch response in the trigger point, followed by a release of the sustained muscle contraction and improved blood flow.

Combined with medical massage to work the surrounding fascial tissue and improve circulation, this combination often provides significant relief where other treatments have failed.
