Need an MRI Scan? Things You Should Know
Published: 25 April 2019

Most adults show some degree of wear and tear on MRI scans, which is typically considered normal. Short-term, these findings don't necessarily predict pain. But for persistent pain that isn't resolving, a high-quality MRI with accurate reporting can identify the actual pain source and guide appropriate treatment.
Not All MRI Scans Are Equal
There are two important variables in MRI quality: the scan sequences used and the accuracy of the report.
Some spinal issues are only visible with specific sequences. A STIR sequence, for example, highlights inflamed tissues that appear normal on standard T1 and T2 images. If the scanner doesn't include the right sequences, significant findings can be missed entirely.
Report quality also varies considerably. Radiologists sometimes omit findings from their reports, either because they're considered incidental or because they fall outside the specific area requested. This can leave clinicians without crucial information.
Our MRI Referral Service
Spine Plus osteopaths refer patients to an affordable, high-quality 3T MRI facility in London, starting from £350. Our partner radiologist provides comprehensive sequences and expert reporting from a decade-long professional relationship. We review the images ourselves alongside the report, ensuring nothing clinically relevant is missed.
A 3T scanner provides higher image resolution than the older 1.5T scanners still used in many NHS and private facilities, giving clearer detail of disc pathology, nerve root involvement, and soft tissue changes.
